Welcome to the website for UKTC (United Kingdom Taekwon-do Centres) in Northern Ireland
Taekwondo is the Korean martial art of self defence. Literally translated it means "art of hand and foot". Whether you want to learn a martial art, keep fit, practice sparring, lose weight or just continue your TKD training, we have clubs in leisure centres in Bangor (County Down), Belfast, Crumlin and Ballynahinch - not far from you!
UKTC enjoys the position of being affiliated to the true ITF organisation as recognised by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). UKTCNI clubs follow the ITF syllabus and are closely affiliated to Master Harkess (VIII degree) who is a Member of the ITF Executive Board
The chief instuctor for Northern Ireland is Mr. Leo Maguire (IV degree). Our secretary, Prof. Kalin (II degree), is the Vice-Chairman of TANI (Taekwon-Do Association of Northern Ireland) which is the recognised governing body for Taekwon-Do in Northern Ireland.
UKTC NI squad members Marc Kennan and Stephen Fitzsimmons recently attended
strength and conditioning training course at the University of Ulster, Jordanstown.
The course was organised by TANI and funded by Sport NI. The sessions were a
first for Northern Ireland as they were a joint programme attended by both ITF and
WTF fighters.
Strength and conditioning training is a must for all adult competitors who are serious
about taking part in competition. Strength and conditioning training will also improve
the performance of any martial artist who wishes to further develop their skills and
progress in the arts without suffering serious injury.
The programmes that were designed for the ITF and WTF fighters are available on
the pages of our web site in the student resources section.
Please note that before undertaking any sort of weights programme please consult
your doctor.
For more information on the programmes and how to perform individual exercises
please speak to Marc, Stephen, or Leo.
Before each training session ensure that you warm up thoroughly. The following is
the warm up routine suggested by Mr William Moore of Jordanstown University
physical education department.
5 min cardio: treadmill, skipping, shadow boxing etc.
3 sets of lunges: forward, side and 45 degree.
